Four pairs of scissors were required to cut the ceremonial ribbon to commemorate the launch of Aeromexico’s inaugural flight from Vancouver to Mexico City on 9 December. Taking part in the ceremony were: Stephen Pearce, VP Marketing, Tourism Vancouver; Anne Murray, VP of Marketing and Communications, Vancouver Airport Authority; Anko van der Werff, Chief Revenue Officer, Aeromexico; and Claudia Franco Hijuelos, Consul General of Mexico in Vancouver. There was also an impressive cake and colourful cupcakes for passengers to enjoy. The daily 737-700 service arrives in Vancouver at 22:05, before departing back to Mexico City at 23:20.
Aeromexico has made Vancouver (YVR) its third destination in Canada (after Montreal and Toronto) with the introduction on 9 December of daily flights from Mexico City (MEX). The 3,941-kilometre route is already served by Air Canada with daily flights. Aeromexico will utilise its 124-seat 737-700s on the route. Flight AM696 leaves Mexico City each day at 18:00 arriving in Vancouver at 22:05 the same day. Flight AM697 leaves Vancouver at 23:20 arriving back in Mexico City at 07:00 the following morning. The arrival time in Vancouver allows for convenient connections onward to Asian markets while the arrival time back in Mexico City ensures efficient connectivity to Central and South America. Anko van der Werff, Chief Revenue Officer, Aeromexico, said: “Starting of our daily flight between Vancouver and Mexico City, we add our third destination in Canada bringing to the Canadian market larger connectivity options to Mexico, Central and South America as part of the airline’s international growth. Additionally, thanks to our partnership with WestJet and Access Rail – through VIA Rail Canada, we continue strengthening our position in this important market.” Ty Speer, President and CEO, Tourism Vancouver added: “Mexico is currently one of Vancouver’s star tourism markets. Mexican visitation to Vancouver has increased by 30% since 2013, and we expect to welcome over 85,000 guests by the end of the year. What’s more, they’re affluent, sophisticated, and interested in extended visits – a perfect fit for Vancouver and BC. The increased flight capacity from Aeromexico will allow us to continue to cater to this important market.”
